Dejah Thoris by Tarzman Dejah Thoris by Tarzman
A sketch of Dejah Thoris, quickly becoming a really popular character for commissions. Looking forward to the John Carter movie, and the casting of the Dejah Thoris character is more important to me than the casting for John Carter. Anyone can play John Carter (well, almost anyone) but Dejah has got to look just right.

She looks like a young Marie Osmond. Now there's a thought...

you know, if i'd read the thread first, my first comment wouldn't have seemed so.. dumb? lynn collins is cute and all, but she doesn't have the presence that a princess of barsoom would carry. but, it's disney, and they have a stable of faces to work with. i like your version better anyhow, she's closer to what i imagined 30 years ago...

Yeah, you've hit it on the nose! presence is what we're talking about when it comes to this type of role. It happened with Burroughs other famous character Tarzan as well. Years ago they seemed to be able to chose stars with presence, and I'm talking some big guys that played Tarzan, Like Ron Ely, Jock Mahoney, Gordon Scott, Johnny Weissmuller, etc, and then they started choosing much smaller guys, Christopher Lambert, Wolfe Larson, and a few of the more recent guys, who were no comparison to the older guys. I recall Ron Ely had a guest starring role on the Wolfe Larson syndicated Tarzan show where he played the bad guy, and Ron toward over Wolfe. Now I'm boring everybody, but I hope you get the idea.

We know that the girl who's got D.Thoris role fits the Political Correctness standards and that she'll need TONS of post-production trickery to make her as she is supposed to be.
Alas.
Your drawing is sweet, gorgeous and top-notch. I love it, so old school, so fitting to the topic.
Respect!

FYI, Dejah Thoris has already been cast for Disney's JOHN CARTER OF MARS: she's being played by Lynn Collins, who was Silverfox in X-Men: Origins: Wolverine (John Carter is being played by Taylor Kitsch, who was Gambit in the same movie).

Here's a link:

I'm not sure... When I think of Dejah Thoris, I always figured someone a little more Bollywood would play her. I guess we'll see how the movie turns out in 2012 (which is also A Princess of Mars' 100th anniversary!).

Hey thanks for the info. I went to check out the actress, and I guess she's OK, but doesn't really get me excited (oh, you know what I mean). I guess with the right make-up she could look the part, but she really doesn't jump out at me as being an exceptional choice. I actually started looking at some pics of Megan Fox, and while she seems a bit too trendy a choice there are times when she really has the look I imagine. It's sort of like casting the perfect Frazetta woman. I recall that when I worked for Ralph Bakshi on the Frazetta Fire and Ice animated movie there was a casting call for the perfect Frazetta babe. You should have seen the waiting room at the recption area at the studio, it was filled with nothing but gorgeous exotic looking gals.

The problem I have with Megan Fox (beyond her inability to act) is that she basically has one facial expression: the "I'll cut yer dick off" expression popularized by actress/porn model Julie Strain. A constant, off-putting snarl that doesn't look sexy at all.

Also, Dejah Thoris is a princess, with regal bearing. I doubt Fox could pull that off. (Your clothing jokes may vary...)

Incredible observation!
You're right -- an exotic actress from India or even an American Native descendant lady or atypical Mediterranean beauty would fit the role better than the 'typical Hollywood beauty'.
I need JC OF MARS to succeed badly, I'm in love with books and comics drawn by the late Gil Kane [inked by Rudy Nebres] and of course immortal paintings and drawings of Frank Frazetta.
But what worried me was the leaked info that producers decided NOT to follow the Frazetta visual trail, considering it 'too old fashioned' (?!?).
Beats me... but I hope they know what they're doing and that it won't be what I've also heard rumours of -- in the vein of the LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy visual look.

Actually, they're going for an Avatar look. That's why they held off rushing into production: to see if Cameron's technology would work for them, too. And I didn't think they'd go for a Frazetta look--too many naked bodies (especially Dejah Thoris's!) for these "enlightened" times. That's objectification! And won't anyone think about the children?! ;-)

Could be worse. It *could* be like that crappy Antonio Sabato Jr./Tracy Lords adaptation that ran on the SyFy Channel. GAH!

Ah, yes... Children... spare the poor children of the carnal knowledges emanating from the Frazetta inspired imagery!!!

It's sad to have Avatar, obviously an ERB inspired romp, as the blueprint to be followed in reimagining the Barsoom world... what a treat it could have been if Robert Rodriguez has remained as the producer or even director of the JOHN CARTER movie..! He wanted to bring Frazetta paintings and drawings to life on the screen.

After SIN CITY I don't doubt he'd manage to do it...

... but now it's all gone to the Mouse House reimagining to fit the family values standards...

I see Megan Fox actually being able to pull of Dejah, a lot of people talk down her acting ability, but she's good under the right direction. That's true of any actor.

Beautiful as usual! I highly doubt Dejah will look nearly this sexy in the movie. It is Disney after all.

nice sketch. muscle tone shading is well done. On the upcoming movie: Deja has always had built in popular appeal. In the books she wears nothing at all most of the time. John Carter is the key to the movie to me. The actor has to own that role or the movie will be just another Clash of the Titans (new version). I hope they dont try to make her his equal in the movie...like a partner. While she is strong and brave she is really meant to be more aloof then anything else. She's a princess after all. While that works in the books, not sure it would work on film with today's audiences.
Art wise it would be nice if they did an old school movie poster a la Raiders of the Lost Ark. Actual painting.
This is a nice alluring pose.
